My name is Dr. Norma Martínez Rogers and I am the project director of Avanzar.  This is a federally funded Health Resources
and Services Administration grant with a purpose of increasing the enrollment and graduation of baccalaureate-prepared nurses who
will ultimately enter nursing practice. This project specifically addresses Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010) goals and our own state’s health priorities.

Avanzar means to advance in Spanish. This program is designed
to help individuals, particularly Hispanics, to successfully complete their education, thereby advancing their careers in professional nursing. In addition, Avanzar will address the nursing shortage by providing more baccalaureate-prepared nurses who are ready to practice in urban, rural or medically underserved areas. We will accomplish this by bridging the baccalaureate nursing program at the University of Texas at Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing (UTHSCSA SON) with the pre-nursing program being developed at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

Objectives of the Avanzar project will address problems such as increased enrollment; retention and graduation of students, especially minorities, who are seeking baccalaureate and advanced nursing degrees; long distance education; and creating a community-based elective for the UTSA pre-nursing students that has preceptor clinical training opportunities in rural settings. Avanzar will expand enrollment in the baccalaureate nursing program at the UTHSCSA SON.

The Avanzar project will combine three major strategies:

  • Develop a consortium with the UTSA specifically designed to recruit, mentor, and prepare students to advance and be successful in the baccalaureate nursing program at the UTHSCSA SON
  • Expand the mentoring program of the UTHSCSA SON to the UTSA for the purpose of increasing retention
  • Involve the community at every stage so that ultimately there will be an increase in the ratio of professional and advanced practice nurses in South Texas.

I look forward to developing a strong pre-nursing program at UTSA so each of you

can be better prepared to complete your goal to be a registered nurse with a baccalaureate degree. I am very interested in helping you in anyway possible to fulfill your goals.
