AVANZAR Frequently Asked Questions

 What is Avanzar?

This is a federally funded Health Resources and Services Administration Nurse Education Practice and Retention Grant with a purpose of increasing the enrollment and graduation of baccalaureate-prepared nurses who will ultimately enter nursing practice.

 What does Avanzar mean?

Avanzar is Spanish for “to advance.”

Do you have to be Hispanic to join Avanzar?

Absolutely not. Any UTSA pre nursing student can join.

What are the goals for Avanzar?

Avanzar is designed to help individuals, particularly Hispanics and at risk students, to successfully complete their education, thereby advancing their careers in professional nursing. Avanzar will address the nursing shortage by providing more baccalaureate-prepared nurses who are ready to practice in urban, rural or medically underserved areas.

How does Avanzar meet those goals?

Avanzar will meet the goals by bridging the baccalaureate nursing program at the University of Texas at Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing (UTHSCSA SON) with the pre-nursing program being developed at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) principally through faculty advising, supporting the formation of a pre nursing student society organization and other activities aimed at increasing your academic success at UTSA and nursing school.

Do you have to be in Avanzar to be in the Pre Nursing Society?

No not at all. The society is a student run organization; Avanzar is here to support your activities in the organization.

 How do I join Avanzar?

Go by the Health Professions Office and complete a questionnaire and an IRB consent form. This IRB consent form will allow us to include you in our database, be included our email distribution list so that you will be informed of upcoming events, and allow us to keep track and follow your success in nursing school.
